Synthesis From Scratch

By

21 September 2011

Turramurra Music in Sydney recently hosted an evening to launch the Roland Jupiter 80 mega-synth. On show was, of course, the Jupiter 80 mega-synth along with it’s sibling, the GAIA SH-01. Both instruments owe their presence to Roland’s shared dominance in the history and field of synthesis, and each borrow unashamedly from Roland’s seminal Jupiter 8 and SH-101 designs.

Demonstrating the Jupiter 80, and conducting a ‘Synthesis From Scratch’ presentation using the GAIA SH-01, was presenter and musician, Adrian Scott. Aside from playing with Air Supply and Little River band, Adrian was chosen by Roland to release the original Jupiter 4 and Jupiter 8 synthesisers back in the day. You’d be pushed to find a greater exponent of synthesis technology in Australia – heck, Adrian was even at the meeting that defined MIDI back in the early ‘80s.

Check out the footage of the night. You’re bound to learn a few things about the essence of synthesis, along with how Roland have continued the heritage of the Jupiter and SH lineage.
