Review: Vestax VMIDI
23 July 2013
If you’ve already got a glut of USB keyboard controllers, but want the iPad to MIDI interface with a quality headphone controller built-in, check out this simple device. VMIDI is a USB1.1 host, so USB 2.0 devices won’t work. But on Vestax’s VMIDI page there’s a bunch of supported keyboard controllers and DJ devices from Akai, Korg, Vestax, Denon, Arturia, Numark, Presonus, Alesis, and there would be literally thousands more. Slapping the Akai Synthstation 49 (not on the list) into the VMIDI posed no issue either — every single control on the keyboard worked instantaneously with no issues. It also doesn’t do straight MIDI over a standard 5-pin DIN cable, but most modern controllers output MIDI over USB anyway. It ships with a power supply, a cable for splitting the output to both headphones and speakers (so no separate line level output), and a USB to 6-pin Mini-DIN cable for connecting devices to the VMIDI.
