WAVES DIGS UP ’80s BSS
24 March 2016
Waves has been doing a little dumpster diving, pulling out a handy dynamics tool from the ’80s. The BSS DPR402 adds a different flair to its deep dynamics roster. It’s somewhat of a forensic workhorse, rather than a general character shaper. There are two channels of dynamics to play with, each with a de-esser, compressor and peak limiter. Furthermore, depending on the style of de-essing you select on Channel 1 — and whether it requires commandeering the compressor controls — you can place the second channel in series to continue using the compression and limiting features in tandem with de-essing. Making the most of the plug-in format, Waves has brought the limiter speed settings from the back to panel to the front and added some nice monitoring and stereo modes.
