We’ve seen a few ‘virtual room’-type products on the market over the years, with Focusrite’s VRM technology being perhaps the most commonly known. Now Waves has jumped on board and introduced Nx, a virtual mix room plug-in that allows headphone users to hear the same depth, reflections and panoramic stereo image you’d hear when using speakers. Waves is so convinced in its new product that it makes the big claim that Nx “finally bridges the gap between monitoring on speakers and monitoring on headphones.” An impressive feature of Nx is the ability to mix in 5.1 or 5.0 surround sound, with the plug-in decoding your output channels and placing them appropriately in your headphones’ virtual 360° stereo image. What’s more, the company says Nx does all this without colouring the sound: “What you hear is your mix, exactly the way you want it to sound — only now you have a more accurate way to monitor it on headphones.”
