Plenty of guitar hardware processors offer an alter ego as a DAW interface, but professional studios will rarely take the microphone preamp in such devices too seriously. Before you switch off, Boss’s GT-001 isn’t quite like that – it’s a compact hardware, desktop guitar effects processor and for the sake of switching audio drivers for tracking guitars (or even playing it standalone straight into a channel) this will be a very handy bit of studio gear. Powered by the Boss COSM engine the GT-001 gives you four channels of USB audio, meaning you can simultaneously record clean and processed stereo tracks. Because it also operates standalone without any USB connection, you can banish the guitarist to another room to sort out their sounds, instead of hogging the DAW while they muck around with an amp plug-in. The simpler desktop design makes it accessible to engineers too – some of those high-end guitar processors need a pilot’s license. The Boss GT-001 looks like a clever balance between serious guitar processing and quickly finding good sounds. Steve Lukather will show you how it’s done at www.rolandus.com
