Any piano player covets the opportunity to have their tracks recorded on a top-notch grand piano with high quality gear. Jonathan Dodd is the man behind Realpiano — a very accessible method of providing just that.

Dodd uses Yamaha’s Mk4-Pro Disklavier system in a hand-crafted DS6 grand piano. The client sends Dodd an email with a MIDI file of their performance attached. Jonathan will check the file for any performance data issues, load it into the Disklavier, and record the performance with Brauner mics directly into Prism Sound’s Orpheus system. The client then receives a clean, 24-bit recording of their own piece. Alternatively, some clients choose to visit the studio to record their piece themselves, taking away the audio files.

Dodd chose Prism Sound’s Orpheus because it suited his needs. “My recording path is very much kept to a minimum; clients get ultra-high quality DS6 grand piano in whatever sample rate 24-bit audio file they want, with a very pure result.”

Realpiano is now working with clients around the world, both in music and media. “MIDI to audio has been the main source of work,” Dodd explains, adding that he has been worked on MIDI files from Rio and São Paulo, Australia, LA, New York, Quebec, Norway, Sweden, France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, Ghana.
