In the virtual instrument world it’s easy to suffer a bit of synthesizer fatigue. Every week we see another morphing, oscillating, multi-timbral wonder. So take a closer look at Native Instrument’s new Molekular (continuing NI’s obsession with the letter “K”), because at first glance it’s not what you’ll probably think it is – another synth. Molekular is a modular effects processor, and again this isn’t your bog-standard collection of reverbs and delays – although these are included under a “Bread and Butter” category. You get a large stack of different effects such as resonators, pitch modulators, step sequencers and the like with the result of turning the most basic sample into something completely different. The learning curve looks a little steep, but NI already has that covered with an online series of four tutorials. Even so, Molekular isn’t for the faint hearted. We’re always saying “check out the website”, but in this case for the best look at what Molekular is all about go to www.native-instruments.com and check out the audio demos, and even the first Overview tutorial. Intriguing stuff.
