Audio-Technica has no trouble selling headphones, its ATH-M50 closed back headphones have attracted quite a following among studio folk, DJs and casual listeners. They look good, and are better sounding than Beats, but with similarly ample low end. Last year, Audio-Technica introduced a bunch of new models to round out its range, but they were all lower down the pecking order, and all closed back. The question was put to AT, would they venture any higher up? And here’s the answer. Two new models, the new top-ranking closed back edition the M70x, with frequency reproduction from 5-40,000Hz, which is pretty wide. The new R70x is the other top performer, with a similar frequency response, but with an open back design that will no doubt be clearer. It’s impedance is also in the professional equipment range at 470Ω, so you’ll need to pay a little more attention the amps you’re plugging it into, compared to the M70x’s 35Ω impedance, which will net you higher volumes.

And not to leave the M50x in the lurch, Audio-Technica also realsed a limited edition dark green colourway, with brown earpads and headband. It looks… natural.
