Gowans Audio’s ‘Filters’
Vintage analog meets modern DSP.
New company Gowans Audio has introduced the release of its first plugin, Filters. This tool is has modern multi-mode high and low pass filters, and a recreation of the filters found in a vintage console. The Australian company is the brainchild of producer/engineer Angus Woodhead, and software designer/engineer Nathan Isherwood.
Pro engineers know that the secret to a good mix is cleaning up the lows and highs — using low-pass and high-pass filters to remove sub rumble, hum, noise, and high-end hiss. By ‘capturing’ the sound, saturation, colour, and tone of high-end modern and vintage analog hardware, the company inserts this into practical-use plugins. Gowans Filters took six months to develop, and aims to achieve phase-coherence and master-quality results.
MODES
Vintage mode has a capture from a particular 1980’s large-format mixing console, dubbed ‘the AC/DC console’. Vintage mode also has the same slope and frequencies as this famous desk.
Modern mode has more slope options and a greater frequency range. It is also a great creative tool for automated cutoff sweeps.
Update v1.1 Features:
- ECO mode which reduces cpu load by over 60% when using Vintage Mode and/or the Clipper (also reduces latency by over 80%)
- Dedicated output volume control for level matching the analog models/clipping
- Largely reduced chance of clicks/pops when changing settings.
Gowans Filters is ready to demo and is available to buy for US$65.
While the demo version has no expiry, the settings cannot be saved.
Supported Platforms:
- Microsoft Windows (VST3, AAX)
- Apple MacOS (AU, VST3, AAX)
I was very privileged to be among the beta-testers for this product. It’s undoubtedly one of the best filter VSTs I’ve ever used. Certainly the simplest UI, and the cleanest and most immediate response. It has my highest recommendation.
