CRYSTAL CLEAR RADIO
After its recent installation of a full Lawo crystal system, Canberra-based community broadcaster 1CMS now houses the first radio studios (both 1 & 2) in Australia, kitted out with the brand new Lawo crystal console, that only launched late last year.
Back in 2013, Professional Audio & Television (PAT), who installed the new system, had supplied the broadcaster with a single 12-fader Lawo crystal console. The company has now supplied a further two of the newly updated 12-fader crystal consoles, along with a crystal base unit frame, for use in the two main on-air studios. The original console is now housed in one of the broadcaster’s production studios.
The three studios are connected via MADI fibre to the main Lawo crystal base unit frame, with logic controls such as talkback, and the profanity delay via the IP control network.
Nick Brown, PAT’s Broadcast Technician programmed the system, “We wanted to provide the full Lawo flexibility while keeping the system easy to use. Lawo’s zirkon configuration software was used to program all on-air delegation, talkback and profanity delay functionalities in-house here at PAT.”
The broadcaster’s system integrator Josh Parkinson, who commissioned the system, said “PAT worked to a very detailed brief and I am very happy with the result and customer service we received from the PAT engineering team. The new Lawo system will certainly provide 1CMS with new cutting edge broadcasting technology.”
Each of the studios can switch themselves live to air, manage on-air delegation and codecs via the crystal base unit frame. As the consoles are fully RAVENNA/AES67 compatible it means each studio can provide level metering for on-air paths, satellite feeds and music servers, with redundant PSU’s, all controlled via a custom configured VisTools control screen.
