No it’s not the missing Malaysian airplane’s BlackBox, but rather JoeCo’s range of ‘computer-free’ audio recorders and players, which has finally made its way to our shores. Gigpiglet Productions in Surry Hills, Sydney has been tasked with finding new homes for the range, not that it will be a difficult job.

We reviewed the BlackBox (BB) 64-channel MADI recorder earlier this year, with Matt Dever receiving the test rig right before a gig (link to review). Despite the 64-channels and preamps being a case of overkill for live recording, Matt found the BB to be a solid performer and believed it’s even capable of recording multiple stages at a festival to the same recorder (with separate Andiamo units attached to each stage).

The BB range of 24- and 64-channel 1RU recording/playback systems are compatible with any analogue or digital consoles, and come with plenty of I/O options, such as MADI, DANTE, AES, and Lightpipe.

Also available is the company’s newest BBR1MP recorder, which won ‘Best of Show’ at this year’s AES in LA, and has also been nominated for a ‘Technical Excellence and Creativity’ (TEC) award at the upcoming NAMM Show. Along with previous BB features, the new recorder contains twenty-four 24bit/96kHz microphone preamps, switchable mic & line inputs/outputs, video sync, timecode and word clock inputs – all controllable via an Apple iPad.

The Gigpiglet team are already familiar with the BB products, having used them since their inception in 2009.

Gareth Stuckey, Director of Gigpiglet Productions said the company has used the products on “countless live recordings and broadcasts for artists such as Taylor Swift, Rudimental, Block Party, Ed Sheeran, Madden Brothers, Pink and Passenger to name a few. [They] have been integral in producing shows such as NOVA’s red room, as well as corporate installations in boardrooms, courtrooms and more.”

JoeCo’s Joe Bull added, “We’ve known Gareth Stuckey for many years and his in-depth knowledge of our products allows him and his team to hit the ground running. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration in this growing marketplace.”

The entire range of BB products are available now for purchase, hire, or demo from Gigpiglet Productions.
