AT99 SERIES DSLR MICROPHONES

Just when you thought we’d reached saturation point for DSLR microphones, Audio-Technica has just released the AT99 series, showing you that you can never have enough of a good thing.  The new mics are designed for use with almost all DSLR cameras and video camcorders and are compact and lightweight, making them a good solution for extended periods of filming.

Asia Audio‘s recent review of the series found the microphones were “highly recommended” for capturing live musical performances or ambient sound recordings.

“During testing, I found myself loving the AT9945CM’s performance. The stereo XY imaging was pleasant and accurate. The sound was quite immersive as it placed you in the location of where the recording took place with perfect audio imaging except for when the audio sources are behind the microphone” (source).

It wasn’t all good news however, with the reviewer (unnamed) finding the mics were very sensitive and some “electronic noise” could be heard in playback, they also suggested using the low-cut filter to prevent excess “handling noise”.

The mics can be used for pc recording with a 3.5mm jack input, potentially allowing them to be used for voice over recording. All models are also equipped with newly developed shock mounting, “deadcat” wind muff and are built for use with a standard DSLR hot shoe mount.

According to Audio-Technica’s marketing, you won’t have to constantly be charging batteries when using the AT99s, they suggest connecting the mics directly to the input terminal in the plug-in power system of the camera (too bad if your camera doesn’t have that).
