TDR: Proximity
A free spatial distance manipulation plugin.
Tokyo Dawn Records is an innovative music collective and label that was established in 1997. TDR is widely credited as a pioneer of the netaudio movement, having made its first steps into the online world using IRC networks, then experimenting with new collaborative techniques and open source music concepts on the internet — years before Napster’s existence. Thanks to the efforts of lead developer Fabien Schivre and collaborator VladG, TDR is not only recognised worldwide for its music releases, but also for its innovative signal processing software releases — with tools such as high-quality equalisers, limiters, and compressors.
The Proximity plugin is a collaborative effort by Tokyo Dawn Labs and Vladg Sound, and provides mixing engineers with a tool to manipulate the ‘depth’ of their sound sources. It is an easy-to-use distance ‘pan-pot’ tool based on several psycho-acoustic models, where all models can be turned on or off to suit needs. Units can be switched from metric to imperial, and the distance Modulation options extend the creative possibilities even further.
Several models can be combined:
- Distance signal delay by speed of sound
- Distance gain loss
- Absorption of high-frequencies in air
- Stereo width manipulation
- Proximity effect of virtual microphone
- Distance based early reflections
