Melbourne Instruments, an Australian synth manufacturer, has announced a 12-voice analog polysynth with motorised knobs at this year’s NAMM Show. Motorised knobs are something quite rare on a hardware synth of this type. Usually a preset is selected and there it is. On the Nina all the knobs will immediately move to their correction positions on the preset. The concept is interesting because in a number of today’s hardware synthesizers that offer similar options, which remember the last setting regardless of how the knobs were moved while switched off. So when a new preset is loaded, the knobs won’t necessarily reflect the position of the previously saved settings and the moment the knobs are moved the sound will be completely garbled due to the fast parameter adjustments taking place.

Nina will have a huge 12-voice analog polysynth with two VCOs with all its bells and whistles, a together with a mixer with a blending option between the oscillators, as seen in the Modal Argon and other recently released synths, as well as XOR cross-modulation. There is also a variable-shaped filter with its own ADSR, a VCA with an ADSR, and a number of effects. The Nina is a desktop synth but has been designed to fit inside a 19” rack.
