COLIN HAY DISCOVERS ATLANTIS
Grammy winning recording artist, Colin Hay chose to record the vocals on his latest solo release Next Year People, using a pair of Lauten Audio’s Atlantis studio microphones.
Best known as frontman and founding member of the iconic 80’s Australian band, Men at Work, Hay embarked on a successful solo career in the new millennium, and has spent much of his time since then touring. His latest outing, Next Year People was released on February 17th.
Whilst setting up his studio for recording the new album, Hay received a demo of the Atlantis FC-387 Multi-voicing microphone, he was so impressed he ended up not only ordering a new one for himself, but keeping the demo too, saying “It sounded stellar. Shortly after I had ordered a new one, I asked to purchase and keep the demo unit as well.”
“I’ve recorded many different instruments with the Atlantis, and it’s wonderful. Vocals, acoustic guitar, tres (Cuban stringed instrument), tablas, congas, acoustic bass, etcetera. It sounds great on everything,” says Hay.
Using the mic on the title track of his album, Hay said, “This is particularly relevant as it’s primarily acoustic guitar and vocal, and both were recorded with the Atlantis.”
Brian Loudenslager of Lauten Audio, said of the musician, “I have been fortunate to know Colin for a handful of years now. I first saw his solo show a number of years ago in San Francisco. I was floored by the amazing timbre of his live voice as well as the extreme entertainment value he offers. I was laughing as much as I was listening. He has that type of live voice that can give you chills.”
The FC-387 is a multi-pattern and Multi-voicing large diaphragm FET studio condenser microphone, which was created as a collaboration between Lauten Audio, and Fab Dupont. Its outstanding feature, the Multi-voicing, allows users a choice of three different timbre’s by just flipping a a switch.
“The Atlantis has really brought awareness to the Lauten Audio brand,” says Loudenslager.
“I hear over and over from new owners how much they appreciate the usability of the microphone.” Hay adds, “I’m using the Atlantis a lot these days. It sounds great on everything, very good on my voice and acoustic. I have one next to me at all times in the control room, and can fire it up on anything at any given moment.”
Hay is currently on tour in the U.S. but will begin performances across Australia in late April. For tour dates and tickets, check: www.colinhay.com
