NAMM 2014: GADGETS GALORE

Among all the high-tech hardware goodies on offer at NAMM it’s not easy for a new app to get much attention. However, this one’s got “Korg” written on the tin and rates a proper look, where you’ll discover Korg has come up with an interesting concept. Its Gadgets app has fifteen separate synthesizers and drum machines – virtual instruments that Korg calls Gadgets – that mostly promise a vintage control GUI and, of course, a vintage sound. By keeping each Gadget as an individual instrument it allows users to concentrate on the unique functions of the classic controllers rather than getting overwhelmed by some monster, all-encompassing synth that attempts to cover all the same bases. The different Gadget outputs and sounds can still be combined with the fully-functional DAW sequencer and mixer that are included. With every Gadget aside from the drum machine, Korg has opted to provide a Scale Function keyboard, a layout devoid of any bum notes when you select the correct key signature. There’s no mention of a tradition keyboard GUI, but Gadgets will obey an external hardware controller. Most iOS music technology is supported such as Audiobus, AudioCopy, and WIST, plus the usually sharing facilities are included. Gadget is currently listed on the Australian App Store at $30.99, which is a 25% introductory discount price. It’s iOS 7.0 iPad only and will need 279 Mb. Don’t be tricked by the cool-looking hardware Gadgets above and at www.korg.com.au. They don’t exist – that’s just Wallace and Gromit-type marketing.
