GENELEC 8000 SERIES GOES MOBILE
Genelec already has the 6010B “extremely compact” monitor aimed at mobile PC monitoring powered by 12 watts – and only an RCA input. Maybe no one took them seriously, or perhaps to be better associated with the well-respected 8000 series studio monitors, Genelec has now released the Genelec 8010 monitors that are similarly loaded with a 3-inch driver and ¾ inch dome tweeter. However the amplifiers have been doubled to 25 watts and the input is an XLR. Also included is Genelec’s Iso-Pod speaker stand. The 8010 has an internal power supply and needs a standard figure-8 power cord for each. The obvious market for these are mobile audio situations such as OB vans and touring musicians and engineers who want to keep themselves occupied in motel rooms other than sticking the furniture to the ceiling. We know that Genelec know how to make serious studio monitors, but being such a small speaker and with Genelec itself constantly referring to “compact” and “mobile” solutions, which is techno-speak for “don’t expect too much”, it’ll be interesting to hear just how well the 8010 performs.
